[영어 공부] catty(심술궂게[악의적인] 말을 하는)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'catty'를 이렇게 정의했다. "Catty words, especially speech, are unkind because they are intended to hurt someone(catty한 말, 특히 말투는 상대에게 상처를 주기 위해 의도된 것이기 때문에 불친절한 것이다.)."

"She's always making catty remarks about her sister(그녀는 언제나 자기 자매에 대해 심술궃은 말을 한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'catty'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is being catty, you mean that they are being unpleasant and unkind(어떤 사람이 catty 하다고 말한다면, 그들이 불쾌하고 불친절하다는 뜻이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"His mother was catty, status-conscious and loud(그녀의 어머니는 심술궃고, 지위에 신경 쓰며, 시끄러웠다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'catty'를 "​saying unkind things about other people(다른 사람들에게 불친절한 말을 하는)"이라고 풀이했다.
