케임브릿지 사전은 'I wouldn't put it past sb (to do sth)'를 "used to say that you would not be surprised if someone did something, especially something bad, because it is a typical thing for them to do(어떤 사람이 무슨 일을 하더라도, 특히 나쁜 일이더라도, 그것이 그들에게는 전형적인 일이라서 당신은 놀라지 않을 거라는 의미로 하는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"I wouldn't put it past him to sell her jewellery(나는 그가 그녀의 보석을 판다고 해도 놀라지 않을 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'would not put it past sb/would not put anything past sb'라고 설명했다. "If you say that you would not put it past someone to do something bad, you mean that you would not be surprised if they did it because you think their character is bad(you would not put it past someone to do something bad라고 말한다면, 그들의 성격이 나쁘기 때문에 그들이 그 일을 했다고 하더라도 놀라지 않을 거라는 뜻이다)."
