케임브릿지 사전은 'understated'를 "not trying to attract attention or impress people(관심을 유발하거나 사람들에게 깊은 인상을 주려고 노력하지 않는)"이라고 정의했다.

"He's very elegant, in an understated way(그는 절제된 느낌으로 아주 우아하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'understated'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe a style, colour, or effect as understated, you mean that it is not obvious(어떤 스타일이나 색, 또는 효과를 understated라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 뻔하지 않다는 뜻이다)."
