케임브릿지 사전은 'on the face of it'을 "used when you are describing how a situation seems when you first consider it, usually before going on to say that this is not the true situation(어떤 상황이 처음으로 고려해 볼 때는 어떻게 보이는지, 대개 진짜 상황은 이렇지 않다는 것을 말하기 전에 쓰이는 말)"이라고 정의했다.

"On the face of it, it seems like a bargain, but I bet there are hidden costs(겉으로 보면 싸게 사는 것 같지만 분명 숨겨진 비용이 있을걸)."

"On the face of it, it seems like a logical idea. But how would it work in reality?(겉으로 보면 논리적 아이디어 같아. 하지만 현실적으로 그게 어떻게 돌아간다는 거야?)"

"On the face of it everything looked fine(겉으로는 모든 게 좋아 보인다)."

"On its face, such an idea might seem odd(일견 그러한 아이디어는 이상해 보인다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on the face of it'을 이렇게 설명했다. "You say on the face of it when you are describing how something seems when it is first considered, in order to suggest that people's opinion may change when they know or think more about the subject(사람들의 의견은 그 주제에 대해 더 많이 알거나 생각해 보면 변할 수 있다는 점을 암시하기 위해, 어떤 것이 처음 고려해 보면 어떻게 보이는지 묘사할 때 on the face of it이라고 말한다)."

"On the face of it that seems to make sense. But the figures don't add up(겉으로 보면 말이 되는 것 같다. 하지만 수치는 앞뒤가 맞지 않는다)."

"It is, on the face of it, a difficult point to grasp(그것이 표면적으로는 이해하기 어려운 점이다)." 

​옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'on the face of it'을 "used to say that something seems to be good, true, etc. but that this opinion may need to be changed when you know more about it(어떤 것이 좋거나 진실하거나 등등 하게 보이지만, 사실은 이 의견이 그것에 대해 더 많이 알게 되면 바뀔 수 있다는 점을 말할 때 쓰는 표현)"이라고 풀이했다.
