[영어 공부] That's a tall order(그건 좀 힘들겠는데, 무리인걸)

 

부탁을 거절하는 데는 여러 가지 방법이 있다. 그중 하나는 '해 주고 싶어도 내 능력이 부족해서 못한다'라며 미안한 표정을 지어 주는 것이다.

그럴 때 오늘의 표현을 써 보자.

'be a tall order'는 케임브릿지 사전에 따르면 "to be something that is difficult to do(하기 어려운 일이다)"라는 의미이다.

"Building the bridge in time for the Olympics will be a tall order(올림픽 개막에 맞춰서 다리를 완공하는 건 어려운 일입니다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'a tall order'를 "something very difficult that someone expects you to do(누군가가 당신에게 하기를 바라는 아주 어려운 일)"라고 설명했다.

"To score four goals in one game is a tall order, even for him(한 게임에서 4골이나 넣는 건 심지어 그라고 해도 무리이다)."

콜린스 사전은 간결하게 "If something is a tall order, it is very difficult(무엇이 a tall order라면 무척 어려운 것이다."라고 한다.

"Financing your studies may seem like a tall order, but there is plenty of help available(스스로 학비를 대는 것은 힘들어 보이지만, 도움을 받을 수 있는 곳이 여러 군데 있다)."

그럼 a tall order의 반대말, 즉 '쉬운 일'은 a short order일까? 이건 '즉석에서 준비해서 서빙하는 음식(an order or dish of food which can be quickly prepared and served)'이라는 뜻이다.

그럴 땐 그냥 "That's easy." 또는 "That's a piece of cake."라고 하자 ㅎㅅㅎ
