내 룸메이트는 고양이를 키운다. 어젯밤엔 룸메이트가 TV를 보며 고양이 머리를 쓰다듬어 주고 있길래 나도 장난기가 발동해 똑같이 룸메이트의 머리를 쓰다듬어 주었다.

내가 "네가 갸르릉거릴(purr) 때까지 할 거야." 했더니 룸메이트가 고양이를 보며 "네가 나 대신 갸르릉해 주라." 했다.

'(누구를) 대신하다'는 on 뫄뫄's behalf 또는 on behalf of 뫄뫄라고 한다.

콜린스 코빌드 사전을 보면, "If you do something on someone's behalf, you do it for that person as their representative(누군가의 behalf로 어떤 일을 한다면, 그 사람의 대리자로 그 일을 하는 것이다)."라고 되어 있다.

in 뫄뫄's behalf라는 형식도 주고 미국식 영어에서 쓰인다고 참고도 달아 두었다.

예문을 보자. "The boss isn't here at the moment, but I'd be happy to sign for the package in behalf of her(사장님은 지금 안 계십니다만, 제가 대신해서 물건을 받고 사인해 드리겠습니다)."

콜린스 사전은 또한 용법(usage)에 대해서도 첨언한다.

"On behalf of is sometimes wrongly used where on the part of is intended. The distinction is that on behalf of someone means 'for someone's benefit' or 'representing someone', while on the part of someone can be roughly paraphrased as 'by someone'. So, the following example is incorrect: another act of apparent negligence, this time not on behalf of the company itself, but on behalf of its banker, when what was meant was there was negligence by the company's banker."

즉, "on behalf of는 때로 on the part of(~쪽에서는, ~의, ~으로서는)가 의도된 곳에 잘못 쓰이곤 한다. 이를 구별하는 법은 다음과 같다. on behalf of someone은 '누군가의 이익을 위해' 또는 '누구를 대리하여'라는 의미인 반면, on the part of someone은 대략 '누구에 의해서'라고 다시 풀어 표현할 수 있다. 따라서 다음 예문은 적절하지 못하다. "another act of apparent negligence, this time not on behalf of the company itself, but on behalf of its banker." 부주의는 기업체의 은행가 쪽에 있었다는 의미이기 때문이다."

그러므로 이 예문의 틀린 곳을 고쳐서 다시 쓰고 해석해 보자면 다음과 같다.

"another act of apparent negligence, this time not on the part of the company itself, but on the part of its banker. (명백한 부주의로 인한 또 다른 사건인데, 이번에는 기업체 쪽이 아니라 기업체의 은행가 쪽에 있었다)
